I definitely felt that way my first game. The guy I played was like, ” yeah most people don’t use Scouts with shotguns or Whirlwinds.” Oops.
When I played Mage Knight I took second in the first tournament I played and I didn’t even have an army yet, just borrowed scraps from my friends.
My first 40k tournament was Ard Boyz, probably not the best tournament to start with, but I’m tenacious. Lost all my games, but had a good time and in the end met Xerohack and Jacob… errr R3con and everything worked out fine. Didn’t really have a, “You brought that!?” experience until later…
Which brings me to a team tournament I played in where I had a guy tell me most people don’t use Guardian Jetbikes or Falcons and that I should’ve brought fire prisms instead. Well for a 1000pts two falcons and a jetbike squad with a farseer did just fine teamed up with 90+ boyz and he ate those words. I baited his monsters nicely and they followed me to the other side of the table where I left them and proceeded to own lesser nids on the field. By the time he recovered the Boyz were in position and it was over.
